Project Engineering Director

Roberts Companies has an opportunity for Project Engineering Manager with an Energy Company based in Davis, CA.  with some travel to pilot plant in Monterey County.

This will be a full time direct hire position with benefits and stock options. This is an opportunity to provide leadership, and engineering and construction project management to meet company goals and objectives. The qualified candidate will hired as a manager or director, depending on experience and qualifications.

The successful candidate will plan, schedule, and manage broad and technically complex engineering and construction projects to deliver gasification plants to partners and customers for waste to energy and products conversion. Broad adoption and rapid growth of the technology is anticipated and the Project Engineering Manager/Director will be responsible for building an organization capable of delivering multiple projects on time and within budget that meet all technical and operational specifications and maintain quality standards as the business ramps.

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Help drive the company environmental health and safety programs at the project level, driving a safety-oriented approach and instilling a culture of safety.
  • Manage team of engineers and support staff on projects; planning and coordinating the construction and engineering activities to build gasification waste-to-energy plants.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the Engineering and Technology leads to ensure the project technology definition is clearly and efficiently communicated throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage the project scope throughout the project lifecycle and ensure that management of change protocols are followed related to approvals and communication to all affected parties.
  • Manage interface between disciplines on the project including Process Engineering, Project Controls, Project Management, Procurement, Contracts, Construction, suppliers and the client team.
  • Manage contracts, relationships and communication with 3rd Party EPCMs.
  • Monitor and ensure the engineering work on the project is completed, on schedule and within budget meeting technical and operations specifications.
  • Work with discipline leads to ensure that staffing levels are appropriate to achieve the engineering schedule commitments and personnel are assigned with appropriate ability.
  • Supervise and/or prepares proposals, contracts, design drawings and calculations, specifications and other engineering documentation.
  • Ensure that the checking and review of documentation and interdisciplinary coordination is carried out in accordance with the contract requirements and project procedures.
  • Give presentations to customers, suppliers and internally within the organization.
  • Develop and implement organizational standards, codes and general knowledge of engineering principles and projects.
  • Investigate and resolve client and/or project management complaints and issues.
  • Manage and report on the progress of the project and engineering work in accordance with the project scope, schedule, cost and procedures.
  • Ensure that the quality audits of engineering work are carried out in accordance with the project procedures and the quality assurance plan.
  • Establish and maintain a climate favorable to the application of ethical and professional practices in the execution of the engineering work.
  • Serve as the engineering representative with client, constructor, subcontractors, and vendors at kick-off meetings, job walks and project review meetings.
  • Create and lead teams to successful outcomes consistent with the business and competitive strategy of the organization and available resources.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position supervises engineers and designers located at our commercial demonstration plant, engineering firms, and commercial project sites.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering; Master of Science Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in engineering and engineering management in an EPC/EPCM environment, preferably on gasification projects.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing team of engineers and support staff; planning, scheduling and coordinating the engineering activities on projects.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how the various engineering disciplines integrate into a complete project.
  • Experience serving as leader and mentor to team of engineers.
  • Experience using judgment, independent evaluation, selection and significant adaptation and deviation from standard techniques and procedures.
  • Experience commissioning gasification projects preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with employees, customers and partners (suppliers).

Working Conditions and Travel:

The position is based in Davis, CA, but will require frequent travel and extended assignments to different project sites. Flexibility to travel and be away from the home base for extended periods are essential. 

  • Initial 6-12 months will require significant time on-site at the company’s commercial demonstration plant in Monterey County, CA.
  • Work outdoors in appropriate personal protective equipment, including rain, cold, and heat (14-degree F to 114-degree F).

Electrical/Instrument Foreman (DCS)

Roberts Companies has an immediate opening for an experienced Electrical/Instrument Foreman to oversee a Two year project for a control system upgrade (PLC to DCS) at a local plant in Martinez, Ca.  The Electrical foreman is responsible for managing electrical crews during the installation, remodeling, or repair of electrical equipment.
